WELCOME HAWK gameboy sequel Devlog #3

Hello everyone,

I've been working on the unreleased sequel to my Game Boy game Welcome Hawk for about four months now, and I’m excited to share my progress as of 12-19-24:

  • Several areas of the game are already built.
  • Gameplay mechanics and design are set and currently under development.
  • The narrative is nearly finished.

Things I’ve learned:

  • How to integrate multiple save files and automatic file saving into a Game Boy game.
  • How to craft my longest storyline yet that fits within the constraints of a Game Boy cartridge.
  • How to do pixel art I’m genuinely proud of.
  • How to problem-solve and test events and gameplay to a large extent.
  • How to create player mechanics that I once thought were only possible for master game developers.

It's been an incredible learning process, and I’ve had a lot of fun with it. Pacing myself has been a big asset to my progress with this title. One piece of advice I would give to my younger self is: when faced with a challenging task, try starting with the fun part first. It can often create momentum to tackle the rest.

There’s a lot of fantastic Game Boy projects being developed right now that make me even more excited to be part of the retro video gaming community and keep doing what I love: creating and playing games for this iconic console.

Hope you all are doing well and wish you a Merry Christmas!
